Ailleurs, by Antonio Guerra, Filippo Minelli, Márcio Vilela and Pedro Gramaxo.
Curated by Frederico Vicente
In Ailleurs we find ourselves in a location between elsewhere and another place, whether that place is physical or just imagined. Geography is unable to categorize it, due to its vague coordinates, unflattened Cartesian references, and the compass pointing towards the unknown. It is understood that Ailleurs is a place for dreaming or a “lovely retreat". There, we look for freedom and to take shelter. Here, we exist displeased with the present and seek to predict the future. Beyond, it seems distant to us and means not just geographical distance, but an inner transformation. Ailleurs can represent either a physical location we anticipate, or a mental state, encouraging us to discover unfamiliar territories and encounter different perspectives, sparking an insatiable desire for answers or understanding. The landscape may appear recognizable to us, with its familiar hills and mountains, yet each person's perspective is unique and cannot be replicated, so the landscape is based on their own point of view, depiction, inscription, or capture of it. We left for Ailleurs with António Guerra (ES), Filippo Minelli (IT), Márcio Vilela (BR), and Pedro Gramaxo (PT), leaving our hand luggage behind. Four artists from different nationalities, backgrounds, and techniques whose exploration and involvement focuses on capturing the distant through photographic documentation.
